Chapter Seventeen

Don’t Mind Me.

It was nine forty-three when Meka got off the elevator and hurried to her office. Due to rush-hour traffic she only had seventeen minutes to make it to the ten o’clock meeting with her senior staff and department heads. While she creeped down the westside highway, Meka thought about what Black said about looking for an industrial property large enough to house their entire staff so it would be closer for him to come to work.

At the time she thought it was funny, but now, sitting in traffic, tapping on the steering wheel, the idea of relocating the entire company to avoid traffic began making sense to her. By the time Meka arrived at the office, it was on her list of things to do.

“Good morning, Meka,” Erykah Morgan, her executive assistant, said as Meka breezed by her.

“It’s morning, Erykah. That’s as much as I’ll commit to.”

She got up and followed Meka into her office. “You have a meeting in fifteen. Do you want me to reschedule?”

“No. I’m sure they’ll wait if I’m a few minutes late. But go ahead and send Lenecia around there to let them know,” she put her things down on the desk. “Any flash points that I need to deal with right away?” she asked on her way to the Keurig.

“Not this morning,” Erykah said as she sent Lenecia a text about the meeting. Meka put in a pod of Peet’s Major Dickason’s dark roast.

“Good. Fighting a fire was the last thing I wanted to do this morning.”

“If it was like that, I’d have been hovering around the elevator waiting for you to get here,” Erykah said.

“You want a cup?”

“I do. The Cafe Domingo, please.”

Once they both had coffee and were seated at the desk, Meka asked, “What else do you have for me?” And Erykah went into their morning ritual of going over Meka’s schedule for the day, what preparations had been made or needed to be done prior to the meetings, followed by any deliverables that were due that day. A brief review of email, and then calls that needed to be returned.

“The IT department was able to track the issues, analyze the data, and identified what they believe is a trend. But when they dug into it the trends may be a symptom of a greater problem. They’ll need to find the root cause of the issue before they can resolve it.”

“Tell James that I’m going to need five minutes of his time, or however long it takes to update me on the issue and the progress.”

“I’ll let him know that he needs to make himself available,” Erykah said, and checked her notes before saying, “That’s all I have for you.”

Meka glanced at her watch. “That wasn’t so bad. It’s only ten after,” she stood up and gathered her things for the meeting and started for the door. “One more thing.” Meka stopped and faced Erykah.

“What’s that?”

“I need you to start looking for industrial property in Westchester that is large enough to house our entire staff,” Meka said, and turned to leave her office.
